Brännbart damm och riskhantering inom processindustri

Flammable gases, mists, vapours or combustible dusts, when present in sufficient concentration and mixed with air may explode if there is a source of ignition such as a spark from electrical equipment. ATEX is the short form for ATmospheres EXplosible. The ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU covers equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The directive defines the essential health and safety requirements and conformity assessment procedures, to be applied before products are placed on the EU market. Level measurement in potentially explosive atmospheres requires special knowledge. During risk assessment you have to identify potential risks for explosion.

What is atex

Explosive atmospheres are work areas that contain flammable gases, mists or vapours or by combustible dusts. ATEX applies to any industrial location where there is a potential for an explosive atmosphere to exist, e.g. mines, factories, agricultural silos, oil and gas platforms, sewage plants and other chemical processing environments. ATEX is an abbreviation from the French, ATmosphère EXplosible (or explosive atmospheres, translated into English), a term which appears in the name of the EU directive 94/9/EC (now replaced by DIRECTIVE 2014/34/EU), which relates to devices used in explosive atmospheres. ATEX is to ensure the free movement of goods throughout the EU, by offering one unified compliance procedure accepted by all EU countries. These directives remove the barriers to trade by defining Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSRs) for Ex equipment. ATEX are a set of rules designed to ensure the safety of products being used in explosive environments.
